Discord is one of the first apps a school or office network blocks. It is a chat app, a voice app and a gaming community in one, so IT teams often treat it as a distraction and switch it off at the firewall.

If Discord will not load on your school or work Wi-Fi, the fix depends on where the block sits. A block on the network can usually be worked around from your own laptop. A block built into a school-managed device usually cannot. This guide shows you how to tell the two apart, then walks through the methods that actually get Discord unblocked, starting with the quickest.

Why is Discord blocked?

Discord gets blocked for three main reasons.

  • Schools filter it because it mixes chat, voice and video with open public servers, which makes it hard to supervise. Discord’s own minimum age is 13, and many schools block it for younger students by default.
  • Workplaces block it to save bandwidth, keep people focused, or because company security policy does not allow chat apps the IT team cannot manage.
  • Governments block it at the country level. Russia and Turkey both blocked Discord in October 2024, a day apart, as The Record reported. It is also unavailable in countries such as China and Iran.

The method that works depends on which of these is blocking you. A school firewall is much easier to get around than a national block, and a school-managed device is the hardest of all.

Network block or account block: how to tell

“Discord is blocked” can mean several different things, and only some of them are a network problem. Check these before you try any workaround:

  1. Look for a block page. If your browser shows a page from your school or company filter (often with the name of the filter, such as a firewall or web filter brand), the network is blocking Discord.
  2. Check if Discord itself is down. Open Discord’s status page. If there is an outage, no workaround will help, so wait for it to clear.
  3. Try another connection. If Discord works on your phone’s mobile data but not on the Wi-Fi, the Wi-Fi network is the cause.
  4. Read the error message. “You are being rate limited”, “Your account has been disabled” or a ban message from a server comes from Discord, not from your network. A VPN will not fix an account ban, and using one to dodge a ban breaks Discord’s rules.

If the network is the problem, keep reading. If it is your account, contact Discord support instead.

How to get Discord unblocked at school or work

These methods are ordered from the simplest to the most involved. Start at the top and stop when one works.

Try Discord in your browser

Some networks block the Discord desktop app or stop you from installing it, but leave the website alone. Open discord.com/app in Chrome, Edge or Firefox and log in. The web version has the same servers, messages and voice channels as the app.

If the web app also fails, the filter is blocking Discord’s domains, not just the program, so move on to the next method.

Switch to mobile data or a personal hotspot

The block lives on the school or office Wi-Fi, so the quickest way around it is to leave that network. Turn on your phone’s hotspot and connect your laptop to it. Discord will load as it does at home, as long as your mobile plan does not filter it. This is also how a VPN keeps working without Wi-Fi: your phone’s data becomes the connection.

Voice and video use a lot of data, so keep an eye on your allowance if you stay in voice channels for long.

Use a VPN on your Windows laptop

A VPN is the most reliable fix when you have to stay on the restricted Wi-Fi. It sends all your traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a VPN server outside the network. The firewall sees a connection to the VPN server, not to Discord, so it has nothing to match against its block list. It also changes the IP address that websites see, which is what gets you around country-level blocks.

A VPN beats the other workarounds for Discord because it covers the whole connection: the app, the website, the images Discord loads from its separate media domains, and voice. A browser trick only covers one tab. For a closer look at what a VPN can and cannot get past, see can a VPN bypass Wi-Fi restrictions.

Some school and office networks block known VPN connections too. If the VPN will not connect, try another server location, or use the hotspot method instead.

Change your DNS server

Many basic filters work at the DNS level. When you type discord.com, the network’s DNS server simply refuses to give back Discord’s address. Switching your laptop to a public DNS service such as Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8) can get around that kind of block.

On Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet, choose your Wi-Fi connection, select Hardware properties, then Edit next to DNS server assignment and enter the new addresses. If you lose your connection afterwards, our guide to fixing “DNS server not responding” walks you back.

This only works when the filter relies on DNS. Firewalls that inspect traffic will still block Discord, and on a managed work laptop you may not be allowed to change the setting at all.

Try a web proxy (with low expectations)

A web proxy loads a site through its own server, so the filter only sees the proxy. That works for simple pages, but Discord keeps a live connection open to deliver messages and voice, and most free web proxies cannot handle it. You may get the login page and then nothing. Proxies also see everything you type, so never enter your Discord password on one. Our proxy vs VPN guide explains the difference in more detail.

Use the Tor browser as a last resort

The Tor browser routes your traffic through several volunteer servers and gets past most filters. It is slow, though, voice chat does not work well over it, and Discord may ask for extra verification when you log in from a Tor address. Use it to read messages when nothing else works, not for daily use.

How to unblock Discord with EonVPN on Windows

If you have your own Windows laptop, a free VPN is the quickest lasting fix. EonVPN is a free VPN for Windows, with servers in 9 countries and no credit card needed. It runs on Windows only, so it will not help on a Chromebook, iPad or phone. New to VPNs? Our guide on how to use a VPN covers the basics first.

  1. Download EonVPN from the download page and run the installer. If the school or office Wi-Fi blocks the download, use your phone’s hotspot for this one step.
  2. Create a free account and sign in to the app.
  3. Connect to a server. Pick a location close to you for the best speed. If you are in a country where Discord is blocked, pick a server in a country where it is available, such as the UK or Germany.
  4. Open Discord in the desktop app or at discord.com/app and log in as normal.
  5. Test voice. Join a voice channel. If it hangs on “RTC Connecting”, see the voice section below.

Before you do this on a school or work network, check the acceptable use policy. A VPN is legal in most countries, but using one to get around your school’s or employer’s rules can still get you in trouble.

Discord unblocked on a school Chromebook

A school Chromebook is a different problem. It is enrolled in the school’s Google Admin console, and the school’s settings follow it everywhere, including your home Wi-Fi. The admin can block discord.com in Chrome, force-install a filter extension and stop you from adding apps, so the network tricks above usually fail.

  • Test it at home first. If Discord opens on the Chromebook at home, only the school network blocks it.
  • If it is blocked at home too, the block is on the device. Changing networks, DNS or browsers will not remove it.
  • Do not Powerwash the Chromebook to escape the settings. Enrolled Chromebooks re-enroll after a reset and you lose any local files.
  • Use your own device for Discord, such as your phone on mobile data or your own laptop. The same advice applies to any blocked website at school.

Workarounds you find online, such as “Discord unblocked” mirror sites or GitHub proxy projects, run your session through someone else’s server. They can read your messages and your login, so they are not worth the risk.

Discord voice not working after you get in

Text working while voice fails is common on restricted networks. Discord’s voice runs on a separate connection, and a filter can block it even after the chat loads. You will usually see one of these errors in the voice panel: “RTC Connecting”, “No Route” or “ICE Checking”.

Try these fixes in order:

  1. Leave the voice channel and join again.
  2. If you are connected to a VPN, switch to a different server location and rejoin. Discord says its voice only works through VPNs that support UDP.
  3. Ask the server admin to change the voice region for that channel.
  4. Try the hotspot. If voice works on mobile data, the Wi-Fi network is blocking it.
  5. Restart Discord fully from the system tray, not just the window.

Is it safe and allowed to unblock Discord?

Getting around a network block is not illegal in most countries, and using a VPN is legal in most places. Breaking your school’s or employer’s rules is a separate question. Acceptable use policies often ban bypassing the filter, and IT teams can usually see that you are connected to a VPN even when they cannot see what you do through it.

In countries that block Discord at the national level, the rules on VPN use vary, so check the local law before you rely on one.

Whatever method you use, keep your account safe. Only log in on discord.com or the official app, turn on two-factor authentication in your Discord settings, and avoid sites that offer an “unblocked” copy of Discord.

FAQs

How do I get Discord unblocked at school?

First check whether the block is on the network or the device. On your own laptop, try discord.com/app in the browser, then your phone’s hotspot, then a VPN. On a school-managed Chromebook, network workarounds rarely help because the block is part of the device settings, so use your own phone or laptop instead.

Can I use Discord without downloading the app?

Yes. Open discord.com/app in any modern browser and log in. You get your servers, messages and voice channels without installing anything, which helps on computers where you cannot install programs.

Why does Discord work on my phone but not on Wi-Fi?

Your phone is probably using mobile data, which the school or office filter does not touch. The Wi-Fi network is blocking Discord. Turn on your phone’s hotspot and connect your laptop to it, or use a VPN on the Wi-Fi.

Will a VPN unblock Discord in Russia or Turkey?

A VPN can get around country-level blocks because Discord sees a connection from the VPN server’s country instead of yours. Some countries also restrict or block VPNs, so check the local rules first.

Why is Discord voice stuck on “RTC Connecting”?

The network or your VPN is blocking Discord’s voice connection, even though chat works. Rejoin the channel, switch VPN server, ask the server admin to change the voice region, or test on mobile data to see if the Wi-Fi is the cause.

Is “Discord unblocked” a separate website?

No. Sites and GitHub projects called “Discord unblocked” are third-party proxies, not Discord. They pass your session through someone else’s server, so do not enter your Discord login on them.
